Course Details

Oakhurst Links claims to be the first golf course in the United States. It's a nine-hole layout first built in 1884. The original group of members eventually died or moved away and the course fell into disuse around 1910. Sam Snead knew about the old course (through his association with The Greenbrier, also in White Sulphur Springs) and encouraged the family that owned the land to restore the course. In 1994 the course was re-opened - but not for the kind of play you're used to. When you play the Oakhurst Links you'll be playing with old hickory clubs, replica "Gutta Percha" golf balls and sand tees. A flock of sheep inhabit the course, helping to "mow" the grass. Post-round refreshments are limited to (complementary) lemonade and ginger snaps. An annual "National Hickory Championship" open tournament is held on the course.  You can find hotels near Oakhurst Links at TheRealPlaces.com.
